Back to School

Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists are once again being urged to share the road responsibly.

The encouragement from the Altona Police Service comes now that action has returned to the roadways with the start of school, and life begins to fall back to normal after the summer months.

Motorists are asked to slow down. Police note the fine for passing a parked school bus with it's stop sign out and red lights flashing is $672 and two demerits.

For pedestrians, police say use sidewalks where available or walk on the left hand side of the road. When crossing at crosswalks, activate lights if available, make eye contact with on-coming drivers and cross the street safely.

Police add, the rules of the road all apply to cyclists as well. In addition, if you are under 18 years-old, you must wear a helmet.

Protect Yourself From Scammers

Complaints of the 'grandparent scam' continue to filter into the Altona Police Service. This is where the fraudster calls pretending to be a grandson or other relative in trouble with the law, and requiring bail money.

In this latest file, police say the fraudster identified themselves as a member of the RCMP when called back.

If you are truly concerned that a relative of yours is in genuine trouble, police urge you to get the call back name and number from the caller, and call a trusted person who can check out the "story". For example, if the person is saying they are your grandson, call his parents to try to confirm the allegations.

As well, police note to never give out personal or banking information.

If you are genuinely concerned, call your local police.

Be Kind

Altona police are asking the public to be kind to one another as we continue to navigate public health orders, noting the latest round has brought new challenges for local businesses. Only individuals fully immunized against COVID-19 are able to participate in or attend places like restaurants, licensed establishments, and arenas. As well, masks are required in all indoor public settings.

"The staff who have been tasked with monitoring these venues are simply doing their part to keep us all safe. Please be kind to one another," noted an Altona Police Service press release.

Police note, it is also important to understand there are fines for disobeying Public Health Orders.

"All members of the Altona Police Service would like to thank the many people who are abiding by these orders and keeping our community as safe as possible."
