Plans are in the works to start on phase 2 of the St. Jean Splash Park project this spring. Thanks to $45,862 through the province's Building Sustainable Communities Program, the park will see some landscaping and the construction of picnic shelters to be used for BBQs and other activities. The structures could also include electrical in order to host outdoor movie nights.

"Obviously it's all free and part of the community," said Jason Jablonski, chairperson for the local group behind the project.

Since opening in June 2019, Jablonski says the park has become a popular place for families.

"Every evening it seems like there's kids there. During the summer months, I don't think there's a day that goes by, unless it's raining, that the kids aren't there," he added, nothing people from neighbouring communities have been coming over to enjoy the splash pad as well.

Also on the docket for this summer is the installation of a water bottle filling station at the park.

According to Jablonski, the provincial grant will cover essentially the entire cost of phase 2, offset with funds raised from the annual St. Jean Quad Derby.

Work is expected to begin this spring with a completion date of early to mid-summer.

Looking to the future, Jablonski says the committee has already planned out phase 3 of the project which will include a toddler-aged play structure.

"Our main goal is to have people there for a few hours and enjoying summer," he said, adding the hope is that all of these facilities will encourage families to plan to spend a full day in St. Jean.
