Update - Friday, January 14th, 2022 3:05 p.m. - Winkler Police Service has provided further details regarding Friday morning's incident in the 200 block of 2nd Street.

Out of concern for the safety of the individual involved, police had been looking for him since approximately 6:00 a.m. Friday. At about 6:40 a.m. the individual was located at his residence where he made comments that further added to the concern for his well-being.

The individual refused to exit his apartment suite, and would not allow police inside.

The Regional Crisis Negotiation Unit and Regional Support Tactical Team were called to assist.

Officers were able to maintain some conversation with the individual through the door, and were eventually able to convince him to exit his apartment suite on his own without incident. The individual was not charged with an offence, but was transported to hospital under the Mental Health Act.

"We would like to thank the public for their cooperation as this event unfolded," said Chief Ryan Hunt in the statement to PembinaValleyOnline.

Update - Friday, January 14th, 2022 9:46 a.m. - Chief Ryan Hunt says the incident in the 200 block of 2nd Street has been resolved, and the subject has been safely taken into custody. Police are now in the process of clearing the scene.

The Winkler Police Service is currently asking people to stay away from the 200 block of 2nd Street in Winkler.

The Regional Support Tactical Team and the Regional Crisis Negotiation Unit are on scene and in communication with a male who is arrestable under the Mental Health Act but will not exit his apartment suite.

Tenants from the rest of the building have been evacuated out of concern for their safety.

The public is asked to stay away from the area until the scene is cleared.
