Tyson Tarnick of the Miller Aces was named a recipient of the MHSAA's Winnipeg Jets Alumni and Friends Scholarship. The criteria for the $2,500 scholarship include on-ice skills, as well as leadership in school and community. The Aces captain was nominated for the Zone 4 High School Hockey League's MVP Award and ranked as the Top 20 point leaders in both 2021-22 and 2022-23. Tarnick is a level two hockey referee, volunteered with the Smitty’s Private Hockey Academy, and is a peer tutor with high school hockey academy for grade 9 students. He played volleyball, basketball, and badminton and has volunteered with various community events such as the Winter Carnival, Special Olympics, Reading with Elementary students, and Grad Fundraisers and maintains a 94% academic average.


The Sanford Sabres are Zone 4 High School Fastpitch champions. The Sabres defeated the Morden Thunder 10-7 in the Zone final Wednesday in Portage la Prairie and earned a spot at the Provincial Championship June 2nd & 3rd in Ile des Chenes hosted by Dakota Collegiate.


Dean North of Carman won the first Professional Golfers’ Association of Manitoba tournament of the season Wednesday at the Rossmere Country Club in Winnipeg. North fired a three-over par 73 and finished one shot ahead of Patrick Law of Minnedosa & Bret Thompson of Winnipeg at the Titleist & FootJoy Spring Classic. Gavin March of the host club and Cory Kartusch of St. Charles rounded out the top five shooting 75. The next PGA of Manitoba event will be the Sunice & Bobby Jones Pro Lady Tournament to be held June 19th at the Bel Acres Golf & Country Club.


Cornie Siemens scored twice in the Winkler Storm's 4-3 loss to Lions FC Thursday night in Winnipeg. Zach Wood also scored for the Storm who are 0-3 in the Manitoba Major Soccer League's Premier Division. The Storm will play their home opener Sunday, June 4th against Sporting Club Mosaic. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped a 3-2 decision to the Kane County Cougars. Dondrei Hubbard and Jonah Davis hit back-to-back home runs for the Cougars in the top of the second inning. Goldeyes third baseman Dayson Croes singled in the first inning and that extended his hitting streak to nine games. The Fish will open a three-game weekend series against the Sioux Falls Canaries tonight at Shaw Park. 


Samuel Montembeault made 27 saves as Canada defeated Finland 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2023 World Men's Hockey Championship in Tampere. Jack Quinn, Samuel Blais, Michael Carcone and Tyler Toffoli did the goal scoring for the Canadians who will face Latvia in the semifinals. The United States will take on Germany in the other semi. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers play their first of two exhibition games Saturday when they meet the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium. Winnipeg will also face the Saskatchewan Roughriders Friday, June 2nd at IG Field. The Blue Bombers yesterday transferred running back Jonathan Rosery to the retired list.
