Elm Creek boys and Rosenort boys & girls lost third place games at the Provincial High School Varsity Volleyball Championships. The Redhawks fell to the MacGregor Mustangs at the AA championship and the Cobras lost to the Wawanesa Warriors at the A championship in Fisher River. The Garden Valley Zodiacs, Northlands Parkway Nighthawks & Morris Mavericks boys and Miller & Sanford girls lost in their respective quarterfinals. Alonsa/McCreary boys & Gilbert Plains girls captured the A championships; Gabrielle Roy won both the boys & girls AA championships while Neelin boys & girls took the AAA championships.


All 10 teams hit the ice Saturday night in the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League. Braden Hildebrand had four goals and an assist as Altona defeated the Notre Dame Hawks 9-3 in Holland. Cole Kehler stopped 32 shots in net for the Maroons who picked up their first win after starting the season with seven losses. Andrew Clark had a goal and three assists as the Morden Bombers beat the Portage Islanders 8-1. Jonah Wasylak scored twice as the Red River Wild shaded the Carman Beavers 4-3. Josh Beauchemin potted the shootout winner as the Ile des Chenes Northstars edged the Winkler Royals 6-5. The Ste. Anne Aces rallied from a 4-1 deficit and beat the Warren Mercs 5-4 in a battle of undefeated teams. Darby Gula scored the go-ahead goal 7:31 into the third period for the Aces who improved to 7-0. The Mercs saw their record fall to 6-1.


Mark Scheifele, Morgan Barron and Cole Perfetti did the goal scoring and Connor Hellebuyck made 20 saves as the Winnipeg Jets snapped a three-game losing skid with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at Canada Life Centre. Connor Bedard had the lone goal for the Blackhawks and extended his road point streak to eight games, setting a franchise for the longest by a rookie.


Owen Parcell will face Tanner Horgan and Ryan Wiebe will face Braden Calvert in the men’s A event qualifiers Sunday morning at the 2023 DEKALB SuperSpiel at the Morris Curling Club. Serena Gray-Withers and Selena Sturmay qualified for the playoff round after winning their respective A event qualifiers Saturday night.
