It's day one of the  Provincial A, AA and AAA High School Varsity Volleyball Championships. The MCI Blues are hosting the A girls championship and the Elm Creek Cobras are the host team for the A boys championship. The Rosenort Redhawks boys and girls teams are at the AA championships in The Pas. Sanford and Northlands Parkway are at the AAA girls championship in Neepawa while Garden Valley and Northlands Parkway are at the AAA boys championship in Steinbach. 


The Sturgeon Heights Huskies will meet Winnipeg's Vincent Massey Trojans in the Provincial AAAA High School varsity girls volleyball final Monday at the University of Manitoba's Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg. The Huskies defeated Brandon's Vincent Massey Vikings 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20 while the Trojans swept the Lord Selkirk Royals 25-16, 25-19, 25-16 in the semifinals. Steinbach Regional will face the Vincent Massey Trojans and Lord Selkirk will take on the St. Paul's Crusaders in the boys semifinals tonight at IGAC.


The Morden Thunder and Carman Cougars were winners in the Zone 4 High School Hockey League Wednesday night. Acoyen Fehr scored twice as Morden edged Morris 4-3. Logan Carson and Zach Dyck also scored for the Thunder. Caleb Boulanger, Owen Maynard and Awstin Suwala replied for the Mavericks. Alex Lemky and Josh Hiebert scored two goals each as Carman downed Northlands Parkway 5-2. Ryan Orchard also scored for the Cougars. Simon Hiebert and Curtis Unger did the goal scoring for the Nighthawks. 


Brett Brooks had a goal and two assists as the Portage Islanders defeated the Red River Wild 4-3 at Stride Place. Landon Thomson, Robbie Moar and Doug Lawrence also scored for the Islanders who have won six straight games to open the 2022-23 SEMHL season. Jonah Wasylak had a pair of goals for Red River while Nathan Ayotte had the other. Portage lead 2-1 after the first period and 4-1 after 40 minutes. 


Canada will play its final match at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar at 9 a.m. against Morocco. Canada lost its previous two Group Stage matches by scores of 1-0 to Belgium and 4-1 to Croatia. John Herdman says he wants to remain coach of Canada's national men's team through the 2026 World Cup in North America after leading the nation to its return to soccer's top tournament.


The Toronto Blue Jays have hired Don Mattingly as bench coach. He spent the last seven seasons as manager of the Miami Marlins and was named National League manager of the year in 2020. He announced in September that he would not seek a new contract with the team. A six-time all-star over a 14-year career with the New York Yankees, Mattingly also spent five seasons as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
