The Winkler Flyers lost their pre-season opener 5-1 to the Steinbach Pistons Wednesday night at the Meridian Exhibition Centre. Dobie Unrau had the lone goal for the Flyers. Winkler goaltenders Bryson Yaschyshyn and Jacob Armstrong combined to stop 46 of the 51 shots they faced. The Flyers and Pistons wrap up their home-and-home Saturday night at the T.G. Smith Arena in Steinbach. 


Todd Fanning, Dan Scanlon, reigning Manitoba champion Jay Doyle and Ken Warwick made the cut at the 61st Canadian Senior Men's Golf Championship at the Big Sky Golf Club in Pemberton, British Columbia. Fanning was one-over par 73 Wednesday and is in a tie for 14th place at plus three. Scanlon was 77 and is plus eight; Doyle was 79 and is plus nine while Warwick was 78 and is plus 11. Gord Hudson (plus 13), David White (plus 14), Rob Oliphant (plus 16), David Klowak (plus 23) and David Powell (plus 35) missed the cut which was plus 12. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers added four players to the practice roster on Wednesday and they include American defensive back Tyrique McGhee, American wide receiver Ravi Alston, American wide receiver/returner Ronnie Blackmon and American defensive end Nate Givhan. The Bombers (9-3) meet the Saskatchewan Roughriders Saturday afternoon in the Banjo Bowl at IG Field. 


The Canadian men's basketball team will play for a medal at the FIBA World Cup. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 31 points and 10 rebounds and RJ Barrett added 24 points as Canada defeated Slovenia 100-89 in Manila. Canada will meet Serbia and the United States will take on Germany in the semifinals on Friday. 


Canadian Olympians Sarah Nurse, Blayre Turnbull and Renata Fast all agreed to terms on three-year contracts with the Professional Women's Hockey League's Toronto franchise. The three players were part of Canada's gold-medal run at the 2022 Beijing Olympics and its silver-medal performance at the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The league opens its inaugural season in January with teams in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Boston, New York and Minneapolis-St. Paul.
