Tanner Horgan of Sudbury and Xenia Schwaller of Zurich won the 2023 DEKALB SuperSpiel Monday at the Morris Curling Club. Horgan played a raise take-out for two with his final stone and beat Winnipeg's Braden Calvert 4-2 in the men's final. Schwaller edged Serena Gray-Withers of Edmonton 6-5 in an extra end in the women's final. Schwaller, Selina Gaffner, Fabienne Rieder and Selina Rychiger received $10,5000 while Horgan, Jacob Horgan, Ian McMillan and Scott Chadwick took home a cheque for $7,000. The 2024 DEKALB SuperSpiel will be held November 29th-December 2nd.


Two Manitoba Junior Hockey League teams are inside the top 10 of the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Top 20 rankings. The Steinbach Pistons (20-3-1) remain at number four and the Winkler Flyers (17-3-1-1) stayed at number six. The West Division leading Virden Oil Capitals (16-5-2-2) fell from number 12 to 13. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Flin Flon Bombers (23-1-2) are the number one ranked team in the country for the sixth straight week. The Dauphin Kings received honourable mention. 


Kyle Connor and Nikolaj Ehlers did the goal scoring and Laurent Brossoit made 42 saves as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 at Canada Life Centre. The Jets have won two in a row and will begin their four-game road trip Thursday in Denver when they meet the Colorado Avalanche. Winnipeg signed foward Nino Niederreiter to a three-year contract extension with an average annual value of $4,000,000. The contract extension will begin in the 2024-25 season. Niederreiter has 14 points in 23 games this season. The 31-year-old Chur, Switzerland native was originally selected by the New York Islanders in the first round (fifth overall) in the 2010 NHL Draft and he has played 833 games for the Islanders, Minnesota Wild, Carolina Hurricanes, Nashville Predators, and Winnipeg and has recorded 423 points (211G, 212A) and 382 PIMs.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed defensive end Willie Jefferson to a one-year contract extension. Jefferson returns in 2024 for his fifth season with the Blue Bombers and 10th in the Canadian Football League. Named a CFL All-Star for the fifth time in his career in 2023, Jefferson was also selected as the Blue Bombers’ Most Outstanding Defensive Player for a third time after posting a team-leading 11 quarterback sacks, three forced fumbles – tied for second in the CFL – and 13 pass knockdowns (most in the league), and 21 defensive tackles. 


Steinbach Regional girls and Vincent Massey boys captured the Provincial AAAA High School Volleyball championships Monday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre on the campus of the University of Manitoba in south Winnipeg. The Sabres defeated Lord Selkirk 25-23, 24-26, 26-28, 25-19, 15-13 while the Spartans swept Dakota 28-26, 25-22, 25-17. Sienna Driedger of the SRSS and Owen Weekes of Vincent Massey were named MVP's.
