The PCI Trojans and Miller Aces were winners in the Zone 4 High School Hockey League Monday night. Rowan Peters had a hat trick and Cam Sarna chipped in with four helpers as Portage Collegiate defeated the Pembina Tigers 7-0. Rowan Cherkas made 42 saves in recording the shutout for the Trojans who moved two points ahead of the Morden Thunder in the race for first place. Both teams have two games left. Griffin Hildebrand, Moses Neufeld and Oakley Peters did the goal scoring as Miller shaded Morris 3-2. Alex Sabourin and Scott Saurette replied for the Mavericks.
The Manitoba Junior Hockey League's Portage Terriers and Steinbach Pistons each dropped a spot in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings. The Terriers fell from number nine to 10. The Pistons dropped from number 13 to 14. The Winkler Flyers, who were number 19 to end the month of January, fell out of the Top 20 rankings. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Battlefords North Stars are the number one ranked team in the CJHL.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-signed American receiver and kick returner Janarion Grant to a one-year contract extension. He was scheduled to become a free agent on February 14th. The Florida native returns in 2023 for his fourth season with the football club. In 2022, Grant led all CFL returners with five touchdowns – three in the regular season and two more in the playoffs – with four coming via punt returns and the fifth on a kickoff. Grant earned a spot on the CFL All-Star team and became the Blue Bombers’ all-time leader in kick return touchdowns in the regular season with seven. He also set a Grey Cup record with a 102-yard return touchdown in the championship loss to Toronto.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced the acquisition and signing of right-handed pitcher Samuel Adames after a three-team transaction involving the Frontier League’s Gateway Grizzlies and Québec Capitales. Winnipeg first dealt right-handed reliever Zac Ryan to Gateway in exchange for outfielder Adan Fernandez. Fernandez was subsequently sent to Québec along with right-handed starter Alex Manasa in the trade that brought Adames to Winnipeg. Adames appeared in 37 games – all in relief – for the Frontier League champions in 2022, compiling 5-5 win-loss record with 12 saves and a 2.52 earned run average. The native of Azua, Dominican Republic was originally signed by the Kansas City Royals in 2014 and pitched for two seasons with their Dominican Summer League affiliate. The 28-year-old has also played professionally in Japan, Mexico, and Colombia. In fact in eight seasons he has never taken the mound for a team based in the United States. The Goldeyes now have seven players under contract for 2023. American Association clubs may carry up to 30 players during spring training, which begins May 3rd.
It's practice day at the Yellowhead Centre in Neepawa for the 32 teams who will be competing at the 2023 Viterra Provincial Men's Curling Championship. The opening draw is Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. Matt Dunstone of Fort Rouge is the number one seed. Also in the field are David Hamblin and Reid Carruthers of Morris, Steve Pauls of Pilot Mound, Grant Shewfelt of Baldur and Ryan Hyde of Portage.
