The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will open the 2023 CFL season Friday June, 9th against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at IG Field. The football club will play seven of its nine regular season home games between the home opener and the Banjo Bowl which is September 9th against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. For the first time since 2008, divisional playoff games will be played on Saturdays. The semifinals are November 4th followed by the division finals on November 11th. The 110th Grey Cup will be held November 19th in Hamilton.


The Winnipeg Jets have lost back-to-back games for just the second time this season. Jonathan Marchessault scored a pair of third period power play goals as Vegas defeated Winnipeg 6-5 at Canada Life Centre. Mark Stone also scored twice for the Golden Knights. Mark Scheifele had a hat trick for the Jets while singles went to Morgan Barron and Sam Gagner.


Jeff Malott scored twice and Declan Chisholm had a pair of assists as the Manitoba Moose downed the Calgary Wranglers 4-1. Dominic Toninato and Leon Gawanke had the other Moose goals. Arvid Holm made 34 saves.


The top three teams in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s East Division are in the Canadian Junior Hockey League Top 20 Rankings. The Steinbach Pistons dropped one spot from five to six. The Portage Terriers stayed at number 10. The Winkler Flyers fell from 16 to 19. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Battlefords North Stars are the number one nationally ranked team for the eighth week in a row.


Canada West will meet Latvia at 1 p.m. and Canada East will take on the United States at 6 p.m. at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge in Cornwall, Ontario. Canada West has a 2-0 preliminary round record while Canada East is 1-1. Winkler Flyers bench boss Justin Falk is the head coach for Team Canada West and Morden’s Trent Crane is on the Canada East roster.
