The Virden Oil Capitals are the first team to advance to round two of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs. Bailey Monteith made 32 saves as Virden shaded the Waywayseecappo Wolverines 4-3. The Oil Capitals swept the best-of-seven opening round series in four straight games.

 

Nate Danielson and Landon Roberts did the goal scoring as the Brandon Wheat Kings edged the Blades 2-1 in Saskatoon. Brandon netminder Ethan Kruger made 22 saves. The Wheat Kings clinched a playoff spot in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference thanks to their 4-2 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders on Friday. The Winnipeg Ice saw their 13-game winning streak come to an end in Moose Jaw. Dominion City’s Denton Mateychuk scored the go-ahead goal with 22 seconds left in regulation as the Warriors defeated the Ice 3-1. Tanner Brown had the lone goal for Winnipeg.

 

Brad Gushue was perfect on day one of the 2022 World Men’s Curling Championship in Las Vegas. Gushue, Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker beat Lukas Klima of the Czech Republic 6-4 and Magnus Ramsfjell of Norway 8-7. The four-time Canadian champions will face Wouter Goesgens of Netherlands (4 p.m.) and Yannick Schwaller of Switzerland (9 p.m.) on day two.
