Environment Canada is calling for record breaking temperatures in parts of southern Manitoba today.

The forecast high in the Morden/Winkler/Altona/Gretna area is 9 degrees. The record high for December 8th at Gretna is 9.2 degrees, set in 2015.

Eric Dykes is a Meteorologist with Environment Canada. He says we have been under the influence of a ridge of high pressure, both at the surface and aloft.

"That has allowed a lot of warm air from the south and southwest to infiltrate southern Manitoba over the last week or so," explains Dykes. "That is the reason why we're going to be seeing near record breaking highs in a lot of southern Manitoba and even southeastern Saskatchewan."

The mild month of December is exactly what David Phillips with Environment Canada called for, back in late November.

Then, Wednesday evening, it will be a return to more winter weather for southern Manitoba as an Alberta Clipper brings snow or possibly rain to much of the region.

Afterward, daytime temperatures are expected to slide back to seasonal, and then slightly below for the coming weekend, with highs in the -9 to -12 range.
