180 food hampers and 1,100 gifts are ready to go to Altona-area families in need this Christmas, thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers. Over 100 people came out for the Rhineland and Area Empty Stocking Fund's annual packing and wrapping spree Saturday morning.

For some, the day has become a part of their annual Christmas celebration.

That includes Judith Wiebe who started the tradition with her daughter Abigail 12 years ago.

"It's just about giving back," she said, adding "I don't want to raise children who are greedy."

As for Abigail, she says her favourite part about coming back each year is meeting other people.

"...and seeing the smiles on other peoples' faces when we're (packing)," she added.

Also helping in the effort was 16-year-old Willow Kehler along with her cousin Josie Toews. The pair have been volunteering with the day for as long as they can remember, and they do it with their grandma, Ev Kehler.

"It's been so much fun and we just keep coming back. Bubba keeps inviting us and we just keep coming," said Willow. "It's a good cause and she likes to do that kind of thing and we just like to come with her. It's so much fun every year."

Josie agrees, noting it's a fun day to be a part of.

"It's just kind of cool knowing that you're doing something for the community," she said.

Cindy Hildebrand is helping to spearhead this year's hamper effort.

She says each year sees an amazing group of people come out to help.

"It is an amazing group of people that comes together. We see families that come year-after-year. This year we've seen new families that have joined us. It does your heart good," she said.

Additional volunteers will be needed this Saturday, December 14, when the hampers and presents get delivered. Those with trucks or other large vehicles, and the ability to carry heavy boxes are invited to meet at 9 a.m. at the empty store space next to Pembina Valley Pharmacy in downtown Altona.
