A volunteer with the Rhineland and Area Food Bank in Altona is not surprised with reports of food hampers being unhealthy.

Angelika Stoesz says it is difficult for small town food banks to provide the necessary foods needed to make a hamper healthy as they don't have the necessary refridgeration applicances.

She says the food bank includes food coupons to grocery stores so families can purchase fresh foods like produce, meat and dairy.

Stoesz notes they also fill their hampers with whole wheat and sugar free items.

She says the Food Bank along with the Family Resource Center provides healthy cooking classes for families.
