For the third time in about a week widespread precipitation was recorded across the Pembina and Red River Valleys. A line of showers and thunderstorms lifting northward out of the U.S. began impacting the region early Friday afternoon, with light shower activity lasting into the early evening in some locations.

“Looking at the totals we’ve received since August 9th, the day most areas saw their first rainfall in weeks, there will now be locations that have received more precipitation in the last three weeks than in the preceding two months of June and July,” said CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. “In my gauge since August 9th, I’ve measured about 160mm (approximately 6.4 inches). In June and July combined I accumulated 95mm (3.8 inches), and it’s important to keep in mind there were significant parts of Southern Manitoba that had well below that total.”

The following totals are for August 27th, and are courtesy PembinaValleyOnline Rainwatchers, the Manitoba Ag Weather Network and Environment Canada:

Altona (northwest corner of town) - approximately 40mm (1 and 5/8" inches)

After a cooler than average, and relatively damp week, Sumner noted sunnier and warmer conditions are in the forecast for Sunday through Tuesday. Daytime highs will bounce back to seasonal, in the 23 to 25 range. Normals for this time of year are 24 for a high and 10 for an overnight low. On the rainfall side of things, according to Sumner, the long range forecast models are showing the next possible system bringing precipitation to the region potentially Wednesday.
