Kurling for Kids slides into their second annual bonspiel to help fund newborn care at Boundary Trails Health Centre
Curlers from across southern Manitoba are getting ready to hit the ice for a cause that’s close to home. Kurling for Kids, a fundraising event supporting children’s hospitals, is returning to the region on November 29, following a successful inaugural event last year. The inaugural event Sandy Friesen, Manitoba’s representative for Kurling for Kids, says last year’s first-ever Manitoba event raised $11,124 for Boundary Trails Health Centre, which went toward purchasing two saturation monitors for newborns. "All of that money actually went to Boundary Trails," Friesen said. "They were $5,200 each, and we bought two out of three that they needed." Friesen says she’s confident the second year will be even bigger. Bigger and better "We’re hoping to double the participants," she explained. "We’re looking for 64 curlers from Morden, Winkler, Altona — anyone who wants to curl, used to curl, or just wants to give it a try. Stick curlers and kids are welcome too." This year’s event will feature guest speaker Zoe Wishnowski, who will share her family’s experience with Boundary Trails Health Centre after the birth of her child. Friesen says those personal stories remind curlers and donors why the event matters. "It’s important because they need money for all sorts of different things," she said. "If we can give them a bit of financial support as a community, they can get more equipment sooner, and that benefits all of us." Each participant is asked to raise $200, which includes a $75 registration fee. Those who raise more can qualify for incentives and prizes, including gift cards. The bonspiel The day will include curling, lunch, and a banquet with awards and grand prizes. Friesen says the atmosphere is always upbeat. "It’s a really fun, feel-good day because everybody’s there for a common goal," she said. "Everybody’s happy by the end of the day." Curlers can register at kurlingforkids.org or through the Altona Curling Club Wesbite, which has a direct link on its homepage. Registration will remain open until the event is full. "We really hope to see more people show up this year because it’s so much fun and such a good cause," said Friesen.
