Navjeet Singh, driver in fatal intersection crash, arrested in Toronto
The semi driver charged in last November's fatal crash at highways 201 and 306 south of Plum Coulee has been taken into custody. RCMP say 25-year-old Navjeet Singh was arrested by Peel Regional Police and CBSA agents at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport Thursday shortly before 9 a.m., after arriving back in Canada on an Ethiopian Airlines flight. Police had been unable to locate Singh since his release from hospital after the crash and was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest for the last nine months. He had been charged with two counts of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Death as well as Obstructing a Peace Officer in relation to the crash that killed a 35-year-old mom and her 8-year-old daughter. “This investigation was a combined effort and could not have been accomplished without the hard work of multiple policing organizations,” said Pembina Valley RCMP Corporal Jamie Sokolosky in a press release. “From the CBSA to Peel Regional Police, and Manitoba Motor Carrier Enforcement – their assistance was vital. This has been an extremely tough time for the family. We thank everyone who put their concerns and comments out there – we all came together to ensure this apprehension was successful.” On November 15, 2024, Pembina Valley RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection. A semi-trailer, driven by Singh, travelling eastbound on Highway 201 failed to stop and collided with a southbound SUV. The 35-year-old female SUV driver was pronounced deceased on scene and her eight-year-old daughter later died at hospital. Singh will be escorted back to Manitoba by RCMP in the coming days and remanded in custody. While Singh is in custody, RCMP say the investigation continues.
