Winkler replacing old fire hydrants, residents under temporary boil water advisories
Some Winkler residents will notice their taps running dry this month as the City replaces two aging fire hydrants, adds one new hydrant, and carries out urgent repairs to the water main. To complete the work safely, the City has issued two precautionary boil water advisories. The first was in place on September 8th for homes and businesses along Main Street South (252–296) and Southview Drive (395–455). The second advisory is set for September 11th at 9 am through midnight on September 12th, covering George Avenue (106–245), Red Robin Lane (201–293), and Pembina Avenue East (325). While the upgrades are underway, water shutoffs are needed, which means the system loses pressure. That can impact water safety, so residents are asked to boil their tap water for at least one minute before using it for drinking, food prep, or brushing teeth until testing confirms it’s safe again. The city recommends filling containers with water ahead of time for drinking, and bathtubs for flushing, to help during the outage. Once service resumes, people may notice sputtering or discoloured water, but the City says that should clear after a few minutes of running cold taps. Test results are expected by September 11th for the first advisory, and by September 15th for the second. Unless otherwise announced, residents can return to regular water use after those dates.
