The Carman Cougars are Provincial “AA” High School Hockey champions.

Matt Lehmann scored twice and Oren Worley made 32 saves as the Cougars defeated the Prairie Mountain Mustangs 4-2 Saturday in Morris.

“It's been a long time coming and with this group, they are special,” said Carman coach Marlin Metcalf. “It's probably the most gelled team I coached in a lot of years.”

Leo Lotscher and Eric Klassen also scored for the Cougars who lost the Zone 4 final to the Morden Thunder.

“I think we really bonded as a team over the season and it really showed today,” said Carman captain Rylan Metcalf.

The Cougars enjoyed a 3-0 lead until Liam Foster got Prairie Mountain on the board with 2:52 left in the first period.

The Mustangs cut the deficit to 3-2 when Tom Chanel scored a power play goal with 3:32 remaining in regulation.

Klassen, who was named the MVP of the provincials, sealed the deal for Carman when he scored his second of the afternoon into an empty net with 57 seconds left.

Prairie Mountain won the provincial “AA” championship banner in 2016 in Minnedosa.

“I'm unbelievably proud,” said Mustangs coach Brody Chabbert. “From where we came at the start of the year until now – it's unbelievable. It's tough to finish that way but looking back on the whole season it's definitely viewed as a success. Get all the way to the finals in the provincials is a pretty big deal.”
