Two Pembina Valley Hawks took home some awards from the 2017 Esso Cup National Female "AAA" Midget Hockey Championship in Morden Friday morning.

Hawks goaltender Halle Oswald was selected for the biggest honour, the tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) after her stellar performance between the pipes for the host Hawks.

"I can't even explain. It's just the best feeling you could have," said Oswald. "Getting MVP and winning a championship here would be even better."

Oswald has started all five Pembina Valley games during the Esso Cup and has kicked aside 161 of the 167 shots she's faced throughout the tournament. This is was good enough for a 1.21 GAA and a .964 Save%.

"It's a long week and playing all these games takes a toll on your body," said Oswald."You just have to do what you can to be in the best shape."

The other Hawk to take on some hardware from the Esso Cup was Katelyn Heppner, who has been terrific throughout the tournament so far. Heppner was selected as the tournament's Top Defensive Player.

"It feels great for sure, especially because I wasn't expecting it at all," said Heppner. "It was just an amazing feeling."

Heppner has been a mainstay on the blueline for the Hawks, and has been eating up a lot of minutes during the course of the tournament. In addition to her defensive play, Heppner has tallied two points with a goal and an assist throughout the preliminary round.

"I just try to play the best that I can,:" said Heppner. "I have played forward before so I do try to rush the puck a lot, but I know defence is my role on this team right now. So, blocking shots, and stopping players is what I try and do."
