Tyra Meropoulis scored the overtime winner 14:41 into overtime to win the 2017 Esso Cup championship for the Pacific representative St. Albert Slash.

"Madison Willan and I were both breaking down on a two-on-two and she drop passed it to me. I saw that she was kind of closed off. So I did a little toe drag and put it top shelf," said Meropoulis.

The Slash defeated the Quebec representative Harfang Du Triolet 1-0 to remain perfect at the 2017 Esso Cup National Female "AAA" Midget Hockey Championship.

"I think from just day one we clicked as a team and as a family. We all just stood together and believed we could do it and it just happened," said Slash goaltender Camryn Drever.

After sixty minutes of back and forth action, the two teams headed into overtime, looking for one goal to end it all and to be crowned national champions.

In the overtime, the teams traded chances and sustained pressure in each others zone, but neither goaltender was willing to let in the game's lone goal.

The Quebec goalie, Michelle Thibault, was the busier of the two, kicking aside all but one of the 46 shots she faced. Drever recorded the shutout with a 28 saves performance.

"No goals scored on me is exactly what you want in a gold medal game," said Drever. "It was my teammates in front of me. They had the play in the other end most of the game, so I think that helped a lot."

The Slash defeated the Atlantic rep, Mid-Isle Wildcats 6-0, then beat the host Pembina Valley Hawks 2-1, downed the Harfangs 4-3, shutout team West Prince Albert Bears 4-0, downed the Ontario representative Durham West Lightning 7-3, then went on to shut out the Lightning again in the semifinals 1-0 to advance to today's championship final.
