A new daycare facility, which would've been opening in the near future, has undergone a significant setback.

Pembina Valley Childcare Centre (PVCC) Director Shauna Richards explained the facility they were going to use is no longer available.

"There were some cost discrepancies, in regards to the cost of the renovation with the facility," said Richards. "It was going to be higher than anticipated and the landowner didn't think it would be a feasible project."

The centre did have a move-in date for the former location, but Richards explained they are basically back to the preliminary stages of the project.

However, Richards said the City of Morden and PVCC have been working towards finding a location that would work for a daycare to open. She added there were even talks of building a new facility, but the question of who is going to pay for everything keeps coming to the forefront.

"Childcare is a government subsidized program, but we don't make any money," said Richards. "We are a non-profit organization so it's not like we have a lot of money available for this"

She did say they did have their capital grant for the old location but is optimistic the government would be willing to accept another application to receive the grant again.

This new centre would have been able to cut the current wait list roughly in half as there are about 125 children already on the waitlist.

Richards added she has been looking for a new space for this facility for roughly the past seven years.

"I'm hopeful that there is something that will come up," concluded Richards. "I'm happy that the city is still actively helping us search for something and makes me hopeful that something will happen."
