The Trudeau Government will give Canadians a clearer picture of what this country's finances look like since the start of COVID-19 four months ago.

Portage-Lisgar MP and Conservative House Leader, Candice Bergen says they hope the Liberals will share the truth about the size of what the deficit is and what the Canadian debt load will be. "We think it's very important that we have an accurate and truthful picture of what the deficit and what the debt will be like."

The Tories would also like to see an increase in funding to the auditor general. "We believe the auditor general needs to provide oversight and scrutiny and look at the spending that the government has been doing."

Bergen points out the $900 million contract the government gave to the WE Foundation, a foundation with very close ties to the prime minister and the Liberals. "They have since reneged on that, and now the prime minister is under investigation by the Ethics Commissioner for that contract." Bergen says this is proof that the auditor general needs the proper funding so her office can provide scrutiny for this spending.

The Conservatives have also asked the federal Liberals to consider increasing the amount that Canadians can work and still receive the CERB. Bergen says they believe working is a good thing, and people should not be penalized when they head back to work after the COVID crisis.

Meanwhile, Bergen says she's heard a number of concerns about the spending from her constituents in Portage-Lisgar. She says initially, people were supportive and wanted to see money spent to help those who lost their jobs and help small businesses through no fault of their own but because of this crisis.

"But it seems with each day that would go on, the prime minister would come out and announce just more money, more money...There was real concern about how much was being spent, and who was going to end up paying for this."

The latest federal figures show direct government spending on pandemic supports has totalled just over $174 billion.
