Fire over the weekend destroyed a single storey home in the R.M. of Roland.

The Roland Fire Department was dispatched to the blaze 2 miles east of the community and 1 mile north, just before 6:30 Saturday evening.

Roland Fire Chief Don Roy said there were two people at home when the fire broke out.  He said they noticed smoke coming from the garage and immediately vacated the house and called 9-1-1.

Roy says the fire started in the garage due to a faulty construction heater and made its way into the floor joist area of the house.  "The house was built in 1983 and it was built with engineered floor joists," noted Roy. "When the fire made its way into that area it wasn't long before the floor gave out pushing our firefighters out of the home, making this a strictly defensive attack."

No other structures were involved and no one was hurt.

Crews were on scene for 13 hours battling the fire and assisting investigators.

Members of the Carman-Dufferin Fire Department assisted the Roland Department in battling the blaze.

The house is a total loss, however, Roy says a damage estimate has not been determined.  He did note the homeowners were able to salvage some items from the home.
