Twenty-nine new plants were added to the Altona Memory Garden Monday night.

Families from Altona and the surrounding area gathered to plant trees, shrubs, perennials and flowers to honour their departed loved ones.

Not only does each plant represent a special person, but all of them are native species to the surrounding area, making their presence even more significant.

The garden first began in 2007 and has since bloomed into a large green space consisting of five flower beds, a pergola, pathways and benches.

This year, two more benches will be added and the paths will be refurbished, according to Deandra Braun, the special events coordinator at the Altona and Area Recreation Office.
