Being a nice neighbour didn't go as planned for one Morden resident after lending their vehicle last week.

The accused had asked the victim if she could borrow the vehicle to tend to a family matter in Winnipeg, at which time the victim obliged with the stipulation of needing it back by the next morning.

A short time after taking the vehicle the accused had sent her 6-year-old daughter to the victim's house. Child Family Services is involved and investigating.

The accused had indicated a family member was in surgery after an accident and was going to be okay.  The accused kept the victim updated throughout the evening saying she was on her way back to Morden, but was being cautious due to the rain and had been caught in a checkstop.

"She (the victim) soon got uneasy feeling and realized that her vehicle was not being returned," said Morden Police Chief Brad Neduzak. "There was in fact excuse after excuse as to why the vehicle wasn't being returned. At that point and time she knew there was something unusual and reported it stolen."

The following evening RCMP located the vehicle roughly 85 km away from Morden, in the Rural Municipality of Grey.

The accused was in the driver's seat of the vehicle intoxicated. She was arrested for care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired. The accused has also been charged with Refuse to provide breath sample, possession of property obtained by crime and fail to comply with a probation order.

Neduzak said the vehicle has since been returned to the rightful owner.
