Good weather has the SWAMP landfill expansion project moving along quicker than expected.

The cell expansion is the landfill's 5th since 1996.

Manager Brent Kletke explains the project wasn't expected to be this far for another couple of months.

"We started this spring, our contractors were making really good time. A good portion of the earth work is actually completed right now," Kletke explains. "We're waiting for some of the plumbing and monitoring systems to be installed, and once that is done we will have final test, and then it will be commissioned."

The project will expand the landfill area 835,000 cubic meters. The landfill receives 22,280 metric tonnes of waste each year.

"We've found that we are at the point at our landfill here, where we need to expand our capacity for waste," he Kletke says. "As our one cell fills up, we figured a great time to expand the landfill."

He notes the previous manager made life easier by having the vision to start the project this season, allowing them to be prepared for future growth in the area.

The SWAMP expansion comes at the cost of $1.1million, and is expected to be completed at the end of summer.
