The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba hosted a number of fundraiser walks across Southern Manitoba to raise awareness for Alzheimer's and Dementia.

Kathy Fehr, Alzheimer's Society Regional Director in Winkler, says each event attracted anywhere from 100 to 150 people. In total there were nine walks in the South Central area.  Fehr explained the walks raised just over $34,000.

"We have never raised that kind of funds here in this area."

Memory walks took place across the region this month

Wendy Schettler, CEO of the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, took part in the Memory Walk in Altona.

"My grandmother had dementia, and then my dad had dementia and my dad died just over a year ago," Schettler says. "So not only is this walk and the walks across Manitoba important for me because I'm the CEO of the Alzheimer's Society, and I see the difference that we make, but I see the challenges that people live with, I also live those challenges myself."

Memory Walks took place in Portage, Cartwright, Steinbach, Morden, Altona, Winkler, Carman, Winnipeg and Brandon among others throughout the month of June.
