Following Tuesday's provincial election, the community of Morris has a new MLA.

Electoral divisions in Manitoba are subject to reform every 10 years. Last year, boundaries were changed, shifting Morris from a constituency of the same name to the new Midland riding.

Mayor Scott Crick provided his reaction to the election results, which saw Blaine Pedersen of the PC Party replace Morris' previous MLA, Shannon Martin.

"During an election period, a lot of the things that we [town council and the province] work on together, whether it's on health or transportation, those things just go quiet for a little bit. So, as a council I know we're very excited to welcome our new MLA, and we're also really looking forward to sitting and discussing issues of concern to our community," he said.

Crick noted that the change in leadership will not divert council's efforts to gain provincial support on issues and projects.

"Obviously Highway 75 remains a priority; looking for a long-term flood-proofing solution there," he said. "(W)ith the federal money that has been made available through a number of different programs, the gatekeepers on that financing is the province, and so continuing to work with them on a lot of our community's priorities will continue to be a very high priority so that we can access this funding for Morris."
