A proposal to install a low-pressure sewer system in the Rhineland Ag Park north of Altona has been shelved for the time being.

In an effort to accommodate any future expansion of the area, the original intent was to have existing businesses and certain households tie into the line which would ultimately connect to the Altona lagoon a few miles away east of town. However, Reeve Don Wiebe says a lack of interest has forced Council to hunt for alternatives.

"When we did a bit of work in terms of surveying the businesses and residential houses en route to the lagoon, there wasn't a huge buy-in," he said.

As a result, Chief Administrative Officer Michael Rempel has been tasked with forming a request for proposals to see what options best suit the potentially expanding area.

"Let's not put this on the shelf, let's start the exploration so that our thinking is clear and we can proceed because we don't want to miss opportunities for the possibility of an expansion to the ag park," said Wiebe.

He added solutions could include a gravity sewer or a community field. He also didn't rule out possible collaboration with the Town of Altona which is looking to expand its neighbouring industrial park as well.

"I think we need to have more discussion on that but it makes sense because we are (already) collaborating on economic development and growth, and some things may be better suited to what the town has because they have more services...but overall we shouldn't miss an opportunity if it makes sense to co-operate," said Wiebe.
