A 25-year-old R.M Stanley man is facing assault charges after a speeding incident escalated on Monday.

"What seemed to be a routine situation, turned into this," Police Chief Brad Neduzak says. "That's why at all times our officers are aware and alert, and treat every situation seriously."

Around 12:00 a.m, on August 28, police were on patrol on Highway 432 when they observed a speeding truck. The vehicle entered police radar at 135 km/h and was locked in at 129 km/h.

Police pursued the vehicle and followed it to a farmyard well known to police. The driver was known to be prohibited from driving.

When police requested the man's license and vehicle registration the driver refused and began yelling. He threatened police saying if they attempted to tow the vehicle, he would run them over.

While serving the Offence Notice the man ran around his vehicle and jumped into the driver's seat.

Police prevented him from shutting the door, however, in the process one officer received injuries to his arm.

The accused refused to exit the vehicle, kicking at police and striking one officer in the chest. He then grabbed onto the steering wheel in an effort to prevent police from getting him out of the vehicle.

Eventually, the accused was taken out of the vehicle where he continued to resist and fight with police.

The accused's mother then became involved, trying to push past police.

The mother was eventually restrained in handcuffs to keep her from interfering. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the accused was transported to the Morden Police Service.

"We're fortunate that we had enough officers on scene at the time to bring it under control without anyone getting seriously hurt," Neduzak says.

The 25-year-old male from the RM of Stanley is facing charges of two counts of Assault Police Officer, Obstruct Peace Officer, Resist Arrest, Utter Threats, Breach of Probation, Drive Disqualified, and Fail to Produce Vehicle Registration.
