This winter saw record setting temperatures and one of the coldest Februarys in recent memory. However, along with the cold, many were also feeling the pain when the heating bill came. With spring around the corner, industry professionals say now is a good time to take stock of needed house repairs.

Travis Thiessen with Superior Seamless in Winkler and Altona says they've received many calls this winter concerning doors that were freezing and not closing properly. "Doors need to be readjusted once and awhile and the weather stripping around the door, those seals don't last forever."

Taking note of drafty windows is also a good idea, he says, and checking if a replacement is needed or the surrounding insulation is insufficient.

"Where are the leaks, where are the problem areas in your home? Make a plan for how you want to address those in the summer season so next winter won't be so costly in the heating expenses."

Manitoba residents can also consider applying for Manitoba Hydro's Home Energy Efficiency Loan (HEEL) which provides financing options for upgrades. The loan covers qualifying upgrades for windows and doors, residential space heating equipment,
insulation, air leakage sealing, ventilation, among others.

Other energy saving tips include turning the thermostat down when leaving the house or during sleeping hours. Running a dehumidifier during the winter months can also help doors from freezing up.
