A new community fund has been established that will distribute small grants through community foundations to locally-led projects that build community and create a deeper understanding of Canada. The Department of Canadian Heritage has seeded the fund with a contribution of $10 million.

The Morris Area Foundation is participating in the program and has received approval for matching grant funding on two community projects that it has identified. The MAF will provide $2,500 for a first nations display which will be part of the Manitoba Stampede.

"The Valley Agricultural Society has been working with first nations people on an aboriginal community display for the Manitoba Stampede. It will get going this year and I expect it will be running into the future," said Curtis Evenson, vice president of the local foundation.

The MAF will also provide a $2,500 grant to the splash park project in Morris spearheaded by the local recreation commission.

"One of the pillars of this community fund was to involve youth and certainly a splash pad will involve youth from the region, and it seems like a very worthwhile project as well."

The $2,500 granted by MAF will be matched by the Community Foundations of Canada fund, providing each project a total of $5,000.

All projects on the program have to be completed by January, 2018.
