The recent legalization of cannabis has prompted plenty of questions.

One is whether it's okay to donate blood if you have THC in your system.

Canadian Blood Services Territory Manager Steve Raisen explains their protocols.

"Canadians are eligible to give blood, as long as they're not intoxicated," he says, "If you're sober, and can give informed consent, then you're eligible to donate. And that applies to both cannabis and alcohol."

Raisen outlines what he's been told.

"The information that I'm given is nothing related to TCH or THC in the blood," he says, "It's completely about informed consent, so if you're intoxicated when you come to the clinic, you won't be permitted to donate. There's additional screening in the questionnaires, and in the testing, for other drugs."
