There was minimal damage after ten bales spontaneously combusted and caught fire as they travelled down Highway 75 north of Letellier Monday night.

According to Letellier fire chief, Andrew Dixon, the bales were on a trailer hooked up to a moving semi at the time of the incident. He says the driver quickly disconnected the trailer from the vehicle once he realized the situation.

A local farmer was called in to use his tractor and push the burning bales off the trailer and into the ditch where fire fighters sprayed water on the flames. Extra water was brought in courtesy the Altona/Rhineland Emergency Services tanker truck.

The incident closed the southbound lanes of Highway 75 about 1.5 miles north of Letellier for about two hours.
