The Canadian Red Cross says it's not too late to make sure you're prepared for car issues this winter.

Michelle Ford, Emergency Management Coordinator for the Central Region, says know your hazards, make your kit, and have a plan.

"Just kind of think about, if I were in that situation, what would I like to have? So, things like you know some extra warm clothing, blankets, a shovel, your scraper, a flashlight, maybe something like reflectors or flares," says Ford. "Maybe some salt or some sand to get yourself out of a situation where you might be kind of stuck on the side of the road and it's icy, a first aid kit for those types of minor medical emergencies, an extra cell phone charger and battery pack."

She says they recommend making sure your gas tank is always at least half full while also keeping jumper cables, water and non-perishable food in your vehicle.

"Check the conditions of the road. Look at the the weather beforehand and evaluate, are conditions going to get worse," says Ford. "Maybe having someone as your point person, especially if you're highway driving, just giving them the heads up that you are making that that travel, and to to check in with you, if they haven't heard from you by a certain time, that you've arrived safely."
