The Board Chair for Kiddie Sunshine Centre says directors are encouraged and excited for the pending merger with Rhineland Childcare Centre. As of January 1st, the two facilities in Altona will become one entity as part of a robust, long term plan to expand childcare spaces in the area by building a brand new, 135 space facility.

it does not provide sufficient space for future growth, and requires extensive upgrades to meet fire, electrical and plumbing codes, as well as to ensure accessibility of service. As a result, the Board has come up with a revised long term expansion strategy that includes a proposed brand new childcare facility.

"Our current location is great and it has served us well since 1983, but it also lacks the space to have additional growth that the community really does need," added Wiebe.

Additionally, the Board is partnering with Border Land School Division and has secured a long term lease for a section of land along 9th St. NW where the new facility is to be built.

"(This) really demonstrates their commitment to early childhood education and to the overall growth of our community," said Wiebe.

According to Wiebe, the proposed 9th St. location will allow them to make use of some existing green space that is currently used by Rhineland Childcare Centre. It will also allow the new facility to remain in close proximity to the early-years schools in town, and other community recreation facilities.

The plan now, according to Wiebe, is to pin down funding for the project through various grants and donations, with an ambitious goal of completing construction within three years.
