The 2022 Provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts came to an end Friday afternoon for Beth Peterson, Jenna Loder, Melissa Gordon and Morden’s Katherine Doerksen.

The Assiniboine Memorial foursome, who were the third seed in Carberry, lost a must-win game 9-4 to Mackenzie Zacharias of the Altona Curling Club.

That result dropped Team Peterson into fourth place in the Red Group at 2-3.

The top three teams moved on to the Championship Round.

“Just didn’t make the shots when we needed to,” said Doerksen shortly after their loss to Team Zacharias. “I thought overall we played quite well actually over the last two days. Teams capitalized at the right time against us and us not doing the same against them. We just seem to have a hard time when it comes to the bigger events for some reason. We’re working on it.”

Team Peterson opened the Provincial Scotties strong with a pair of wins on day one as they defeated Alyssa Calvert of Carberry 9-4 and Terry Ursel of Neepawa 9-6.

Peterson, Loder, Doerksen and Gordon lost twice on day two as they fell 10-8 to Kristy McDonald of the Granite and 8-6 to Darcy Robertson of Assiniboine Memorial.

Friday afternoon’s loss to Zacharias meant the team was leaving Carberry and heading back to Winnipeg.

“It’s quite disappointing,” Doerksen said. “We play all year and we play in pretty good events and we think we prepare ourselves well enough for the Manitoba Provincials. It just goes to show the strength of the field. We have a very strong province and you can’t take anything away from the teams out there. Everyone is playing really well.”

It’s the second straight early exit for Peterson, Loder, Doerksen and Gordon at the Provincial Scotties.

They won their first two games at the 2020 Provincial Scotties in Rivers but then lost their last three and were eliminated.

Team Peterson finished the round robin with a 5-2 record at the 2019 Provincial Scotties in Gimli and lost a tie-breaker to Abby Ackland.
