Emerson-Franklin Municipality is planning for some major upgrades to sewer infrastructure in a couple of its urban centres, but it's going to take federal and provincial dollars to make it a reality.

The municipality has submitted the multi-million dollar proposal as a green infrastructure project under the Investing in Canada program, according to Reeve Dave Carlson.

"The infrastructure in Emerson dates back to the 1950s and in Dominion City, it goes back to the 1960s. That definitely needs to be upgraded and replaced, so we've identified that as being critical to these communities."

The cost of upgrading the water mains in both Emerson and Dominion City will cost over $7 million. Carlson admits it's not a glamorous kind of project, but it's necessary for these communities to move forward into the future.

Meanwhile, the municipality of Emerson-Franklin is also looking to the Investing In Canada infrastructure program to support its Internet connectivity project.

The municipality has signed on with Winkler based Valley Fiber to provide fiber-optic Internet service to its ratepayers in Dominion City and Emerson.

However, Carlson says they also want to provide wireless service to ratepayers in the eastern part of the municipality as well, which would require a series of towers.

"We see that as being critical to the well-being of the community in that area and also for safety because we've got fire trucks out in that area which has bad cell service as well. It all kind of goes together. We definitely want to bring the 21st century into our entire municipality."

If the project were approved for infrastructure dollars, Emerson-Franklin Municipality would cost-share the project with the other two levels of government up to a maximum of $50,000.
