Winkler Fire Department members battled a blaze at Penner Waste, located north of the City, Thursday evening and into early Friday morning.

Chief Richard Paetzold says crews were on scene for over 12 hours extinguishing a fire that started in a bio-fuel pile.

He notes it took six hours to move the portion of the pile that hadn't been affected before being able to directly attack the fire burning deeper underneath.

He says they believe the fire could've been developing for months until it finally surfaced Thursday.

A tanker from Altona was also called in to assist due to water supply issues in Winkler caused by a failed pump at the community's water reservoir which had happened earlier that day.

52,000 gallons were used to extinguish the fire.
