Altona Minor Hockey hosted a Girls Hockey Day Sunday at the Millennium Exhibition Centre. Girls new to the sport, and those who have played for a few years, participated in on, and off ice drills and also heard from a very special guest.

Altona's Kate Friesen, who is coming off a four year Division I NCAA women's hockey playing career with the Providence College Friars in Rhode Island, spent the day with the girls, and also chatted with them about the sport.

Morning Show Co-Host Chris Sumner stopped by to talk with Kate, and asked her to reflect on her time with the Friars.

Kate has moved back to Southern Manitoba, and is already giving back, getting involved in coaching a local Pee Wee girls hockey team, and helping run a breakfast program, too. For the young ladies that participated in the Girls Hockey Day... a great role model indeed!

It was doubly fitting Kate was part of the day with a National Women's U-18 Championship Exhibition game capping off the afternoon. Kate was part of the 2012 Pembina Valley Hawks team which captured the championship when it was known as the Esso Cup. The National championship is being played for the first time in Manitoba over the next week, with Morden and Winkler hosting the tournament.
