The Swan Lake, Morden, Winkler, Altona and Gretna area can expect to see an influx of workers in the area for fall.

David Coll, a spokesperson for Enbridge, said Line 3 pipeline construction workers are coming to the area in August and will be calling the Pembina Valley their home until the new year.

"There are two spreads in this area, construction spreads," said Coll. "In each of those areas, there will be about 800 hundred workers on the crew at peak construction."

Construction will run from August to approximately January or February. The following year, crews will also be returning to restore the land.

Coll explained crews will be looking for a place to eat, sleep, and so on.

"We don't have any work camps, so that creates a benefit for the community in terms of each of those workers will need a place to stay... they may need an early breakfast, they may need dinner. They will be shopping for services locally during their off hours."

Coll said Altona will be one of the towns where business may pick up.

"Altona is a fairly central location, in addition, we have a significant operation at Gretna... so Altona could be a very convenient location for some of those workers."

"I think what local businesses can expect is to get a little bit busier," said Altona CAO Dan Gagne. "There might be some extra services required in the next few months."
