The start of October marks World Breastfeeding Week around the globe.

Jodi Unger is the Regional Prenatal Public Health Nurse In Southern Health-Sante Sud. She outlines what the week is all about.

"Breastfeeding week is celebrated in Canada from October 1-7. We celebrate it to encourage breastfeeding," says Unger. "Along with this, we also celebrate it because we want to improve the health of our babies in our communities and also breastfeeding parents around the globe."

Unger says breastfeeding has a lot of advantages.

"Breast milk continually changes for what an infant needs. We know that there's over 200 known components in breast milk," says Unger. "There's different levels of carbohydrates and proteins, because breast milk is designed to build a brain."

Unger encourages anyone who is curious on the topic to reach out.

"If you haven't heard about breastfeeding, if you have questions about breastfeeding, talk to your public health nurse," says Unger. "Public health nurses are experts on this topic, and we love to support, encourage, and get the education out there for people."
