The Winkler Flyers are pleased to announce that All-Star forward Nick Lazorko has accepted a scholarship to play at Castleton State College in Vermont for the 2010/2011 season. The pride of Rockwall, Texas was the key piece of the Flyers offence over three seasons in the MJHL and will continue his career south of the border.

During his three seasons in an orange and black uniform, Lazorko had many highlight real plays and many big goals. However, he will probably be best known for his overtime magic during the Flyers 2009/2010 Addison Division semi-final series win over the Selkirk Steelers.

With Winkler down 2-1 in the best of seven series, Lazorko scored the overtime winners in games four, five, and six to give the Flyers the four games to two series win and a date with the Winnipeg Saints in the division final. The stick that he used for those magical goals now sits in the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.

Lazorko was an offensive force from the very beginning of his junior career and wracked up 219 points in 182 regular season games as a Flyer. His best season came in 08/09 when he had 103 points and 54 goals. He also averaged a point a game in the playoffs with 26 points in 26 Flyer playoff games.

Lazorko trades in his orange and black for the green, white, and silver of the Castleton State Spartans who play in the ECAC of NCAA Division III Men’s Hockey. A number of other Flyers have also called Castleton home following their junior careers including Marlin Froese, Lindsey Gullett, and Brandon Heck.

The Winkler Flyers would also like to announce that defenseman Mac Williams will be playing next season at the University of St. Thomas in Minnseota. The Tommies play in the MIAC of NCAA Division III Men’s Hockey. Williams scored 30 points in 85 regular season games with Winkler the past two seasons and added nice depth on the blue line.
