The FIFA World Cup final goes this Sunday, and to celebrate South Central Immigrant Services in partnership with Hillside Community Church and Morden Minor Soccer are hosting a Morden World Cup soccer weekend.

Organizer Sally Marsolais admits she hasn't been a life long soccer fan, and didn't realize just how big the sport was worldwide. By catching a game or two over the last month, and through her work at Immigrant Services, she started to develop the idea of holding a soccer weekend as a way to celebrate community around the worldwide phenomenon of the World Cup.

Marsolais says there are people from 73 countries currently living in our region, and that played a role in putting this event together.

Things kick-off Saturday evening with the region’s own mini World Cup, a community soccer tournament organized by Morden Minor Soccer. Area residents are encouraged to make their own teams, or simply come out and be placed with a team for some friendly competition. There will be fun prizes given out Sunday afternoon at the Log Cabin on the corner of Thornhill and 1st Street in Morden. Soccer teams are meeting at the Morden Collegiate field at 6:30 pm. Teams can be from 5 to 8 people and games will be 20 minutes apiece. Contact Marsolais at 822-4387 to register yourself or your team. People are encouraged to name their team or represent a nation, company, church, or even their own family or neighbourhood.

Sunday afternoon Hillside Community Church opens the Log Cabin doors to host a big screen, big sound presentation of the World Cup Final. Doors open at 1 p.m. with the game starting at approximately 1:30 p.m. Residents are once again encouraged to bring friends and a snack for a potluck snack table to share from.
