Morden's South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League squad will now be known as the Bombers. They are changing their name in light of recent events around the sporting world with names regarding indigenous people being abolished. This is a long time coming for many but team president Brent Meleck says they wanted to make sure they did it right.

"We knew we had to change it, it was just a matter of time," explains Meleck. "We weren't just going to slap a name on and go from there, we took our time doing it. We went through a lot of meetings and talked to a lot of people as we tried to make our process right. We didn't want to make any decisions that may offend someone or make bad decisions."

Morden has cut it pretty close with the season starting up in the middle of next month and plenty of changes still to be made to the locker room and equipment. Meleck says it is a lot of work to re-brand a team and gives a shout out to the rest of the organization's executives for their tremendous work.

Meleck says they wanted to give the community a chance to decide the new moniker, specifically the youth.

"We had a contest that we threw over to the minor hockey teams to decide the name and logo," says Meleck. "We had a lot of awesome ideas, drawings, and names that were sent to us. We really appreciated that."

Meleck notes it was also fitting because the former Morden team in the SEMHL (prior to this current franchise coming into the league in 1986) was known as the Bombers. He adds they spoke with alumni from that team and got the go-ahead from them on the new name as well.

He says the feedback has been mostly positive from the community and notes he is excited to see the feedback from fans at the rink when the season finally begins.
