Now that the first official snowfall has arrived in southern Manitoba, motorists are reminded to drive to the conditions of the road.

Altona Police Chief Perry Batchelor says he has already seen some drivers not adjusting to the slick conditions and not taking the time to clean the snow off their vehicles.

"Take the time to clear all your windows ... and take the time to clear off the snow on the roof of your vehicle. As we know, when we stop that snow can slide forward onto the windshield or slide back onto your rear window which hinders your vision in the rearview mirror. You want as much visibility as you can possibly have."

Batchelor reminds motorists that, while speed limit signs indicate the maximum speeds allowed for roads and highways, you don't have to drive that fast if road conditions deteriorate due to weather.

He has a few tips when it comes to winter driving.

"The best recommendation we can make is snow tires. Snow tires help big time in winter, but if you don't have them then slow down and drive to the conditions. Also, when it comes to winter driving unless highways have bone dry conditions don't use your cruise control because the cruise control does not react as quickly as your foot."

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, snow flurries will come to an end on Thursday followed by a mix of sun and cloud along with sub-zero temperatures.
