David Mutai of Kenya and Selene Sharpe of Winnipeg are the 2019 Manitoba Marathon champions.

Mutai completed the 26.2 mile course in 2:27:09.

The 33-year-old, who now lives and trains in Toronto, previously won marathons in Mississauga, Waterloo and Saskatoon this year.

“It gives me joy and it encourages me to run more,” said Mutai shortly after his first place finish at I.G. Field on the campus of the University of Manitoba in south Winnipeg.

Mutai finished almost nine minutes ahead of runner up Jason Acosta of New Brighton, Minnesota.

Kevin Harder of Winkler finished in 14th place with a time of 2:58:41 and Denver Hildebrand of Rosenfeld was 30th in 3:12:57.

Sharpe won the womens title in a time of 2:53:39.

“This year I really, really wanted to make it under three hours so I’m really happy that happened,” said Sharpe. “I trained a lot more this year I think and was just a little more mentally prepared going into it.”

The 19-year-old Sharpe finished behind 2018 champion Amy Feit of Luverne, Minnesota in her first Manitoba Marathon and was thrilled to break the tape this year.

“It really means a lot to me. I’ve been imagining this for a really long time so it means a lot.”

Brooke MacDonald of Yorkton finished six minutes back of Sharpe in second place.
