A local resident spotted this oversized caterpillar on their lawn this week.

Barb Teichroeb from Plum Coulee spotted the grub and was surprised to learn it's one of the largest caterpillar species found in Canada. The chubby and green in colour grub features blue and yellow spikes along its body, and was identified as the Cecropia Moth caterpillar.

Meanwhile, Melissa Penner also spotted the caterpillar in Morden Park August 20th.

The Cecropia Moth caterpillar is North America's largest native moth and can grow to a wingspan of five to seven inches or more. The Cecropia Moth larvae are most commonly found on maple trees.
