A tree fire is to blame for a power outage Wednesday night in Altona.

Members of Altona/Rhineland Emergency Services responded to the call on Willow Bay around 2:30 a.m. after an overnight storm brought gusty winds and heavy rain that forced the tree into contact with a neighbouring hydro wire.

According to deputy fire chief, Barry Friesen, this sparked the fire and led to the eventual power outage after a few wires burned off and fell to the ground.

A spokesperson with Manitoba Hydro says the incident left about 939 customers in the dark from 3:16 a.m. until 4:20 a.m. when service was restored.
